"백기를 흔들다" "항복하다" "포기하다"

"백기를 흔들다", "항복하다", "포기하다" 등을 영어로는 어떻게 표현할까?

'wave the white flag'라는 표현이 있는데 직역하면, 말 그대로 "백기를(white flag) 흔들다(wave)"가 된다. 의미하는 바도 "백기를 흔들다", "항복하다(surrender)", "포기하다(give up)" 등이 되는데 이는 전쟁에서 유래된 말이고, 국제적으로 동일한 신호라고 보면 된다.  

 

'wave the white flag'와 유사한 표현으로는 'raise the white flag', 'show the white flag' 등이 있다. 

이러한 표현들을 영어로 뜻풀이를 해 보면, 'to offer a sign of surrender or defeat'가 되는데 여기서 'white flag(백기)' 자체가 'a sign that you accept that you have failed or been defeated'가 되기때문이다. 
예문을 들어 보면, 

I waved the white flag at school.
나는 학교에서 포기를 했다.

They're willing to wave the white flag of surrender.  
그들은 기꺼이 항복의 백기를 흔들었다.
